A Digital Reinvention:
Lulu’s Journey
Lulu Hypermarket, one of the largest and most influential retailers in the Middle East, set out to transform its multi-country operations into a unified, future-ready commerce model. By partnering with Akinon, Lulu reimagined every layer of its digital infrastructure, from in-store picking to real-time logistics, delivering a faster, smarter, and more scalable experience across the GCC region.
Regional Power, Digital Vision
Lulu, a prominent retailer in the Middle East with a market value exceeding $8 billion, has solidified its place as a leader in the GCC grocery sector, both online and offline. Competing head-to-head with Carrefour in the region, Lulu operates across 8 countries with nearly 200 stores and processes over 300,000 orders per month.
As part of its digital growth strategy, Lulu chose to partner with Akinon to strengthen its own e-commerce channels, increase order volume, and deliver a superior member experience.
A Strategy for Scale
To sustain growth across borders, Lulu identified a need to standardize operations across all active markets. This included the development of a multi-currency front-end solution tailored for 6+ countries in the GCC, with 5 more to be added. The transformation effort also required an integrated commerce infrastructure flexible enough to handle localised configurations, currency differences, and store-specific rules without compromising speed or experience.
Store-Picking at Scale
One of the most critical operational challenges was shifting from dark store fulfilment to in-store picking, while keeping productivity high. This involved zone-based picking flows, replacement logic, weight-sensitive handling, and automated POC invoicing. With the deployment of Akinon’s Picking App, Lulu was able to support real-time fulfilment decisions, guiding store staff through product categories, timing splits (dry vs. fresh), and live stock data, enabling up to 150 items/hour per zone.
Synchronised and Smarter Delivery
Lulu needed to optimise its own fleet and third-party logistics (3PL) coordination to fulfil a variety of delivery promises:
- Express (1-hour slots)
- Same-day scheduled
- Next-day scheduled
With Akinon’s advanced OMS and logistics orchestration, Lulu introduced route planning logic that reduced delivery costs by up to 20%, while maintaining high on-time rates.
Integration with platforms like Talabat further aligned demand generation with fulfilment precision.
Omnichannel by Design
By selecting Akinon, Lulu gained access to a composable, headless commerce architecture that enables seamless omnichannel growth. With an API-first foundation, native mobile apps, and real-time analytics, the platform supports continuous iteration and upgrades, without downtime.
Centralised operations across Web, Mobile, OMS, BOPIS, and regional payment setups have empowered Lulu to operate as a truly unified commerce organisation.
Localized Integrations for a Seamless and Scalable Experience
The project features a comprehensive and flexible payment infrastructure. Multiple payment providers have been integrated, with variations tailored to the specific requirements of each country.
In addition to traditional payment methods such as credit and debit cards, the system also supports special payment solutions like:
Gift cards
Digital wallets
These integrations enhance the user experience while ensuring local adaptability.
Furthermore, various discount and promotion mechanisms have been integrated into the payment flow to support campaign and loyalty initiatives. This setup ensures a scalable and adaptable payment system that meets the diverse needs and preferences of users across different markets.
Additionally, the project includes marketing integrations and customized widgets tailored to each country and delivery type. The user journeys within the app have also been adapted according to the selected delivery method, ensuring a more relevant and seamless experience based on users’ location and delivery preferences.
